Henri Manguin in the Midday Sun exhibition at Villa Théo du Lavandou
Villa Théo, Le Lavandou
From July 6 to September 28, 2024
Happiness and Beauty. This exhibition is a true celebration of life and light, plunging us into the heart of Henri Manguin's insatiable quest. The one whom Guillaume Apollinaire described as a “voluptuous painter”, invites us into a world where Mediterranean light, radiant nudes and scenes of family life blend into bold and vibrant chromatic harmonies.
The works on display – around thirty paintings, watercolors and drawings – retrace the highlights of the artist's career, from 1904 to 1913. Here, color becomes a vector of pure emotion , transposing the luminous intensity of the South into dazzling compositions. Manguin, a close friend of Paul Signac and Henri Matisse, is distinguished by a use of colors which precedes the daring of his contemporaries. The bathers, the pine forests and the rocks of Layet are all witnesses to his talent for capturing the essence of places, for transfiguring reality into an idyllic, almost mythical vision.
