“How do we move? How are we moved by each other?”

Artist Steffani Jemison considers how the human body absorbs and communicates knowledge through movement. Often taking inspiration from figures in the black radical tradition, Jemison connects drawing, gesture, and writing with performance, installation, and the moving image, creating works that move freely between physical, intellectual, and spiritual registers. Jemison’s installation in the MATRIX gallery reflects her ongoing exploration of the use of flight, air, sea, and sky as evocative political metaphors, particularly in the words of Nat Turner and Huey P. Newton. Staging sculpture, lenticular prints, and drawings on brass and silvered glass against a decommissioned theatrical backdrop, Jemison invites viewers to consider perspective and perception as both optical and embodied phenomena.
