Exhibition From Vermeer to Van Gogh, the Dutch masters at the Carrières des Lumières
Careers of the Enlightenment
From February 24, 2023 to January 7, 2024
After Venice and its masters, the Carrières des Lumières set sail. Head for the masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age! From the kingdom of the gods of Abraham Bloemaert to the frozen expanses of Hendrick Avercamp, the exhibition takes us in the footsteps of the ancient masters, into the privacy of their homes and their workshops. Vermeer opens the ball: silent chronicler of his time, the virtuoso painter immerses us in the tranquility of the refined interiors of Dutch society, capturing for eternity a look, an attitude, a gesture. Suddenly the light flickers. Night settles in the heart of the cathedrals with the king of chiaroscuro Rembrandt. The images scroll, the scenes follow one another, giving way to the legendary Night Watch, strikingly realistic. We gradually abandon the master's waxy palette for the rural settings of Paulus Potter, the farmyard scenes of Melchior d'Hondecoeter or the still lifes of Rachel Ruysch whose exotic flowers bloom in the freshness of the Carrières, like a bouquet finale which masterfully closes this Golden Age. This stroll through the centuries ends alongside the great heir of Dutch tradition: Van Gogh. In the south of France, enveloped by the wheat fields, we let ourselves be caressed by the last rays of the sun conducive to an ultimately Mediterranean nap before slipping into the dream of a summer night surrounded by the stars.
