Joana Vasconcelos exhibition at the Sainte-Chapelle of the Château de Vincennes: the Tree of Life in pictures
11
It's hard not to think of the myth of Penelope in front of this spectacular installation straight out of a fairy tale: a majestic laurel culminating at more than thirteen meters in height which is rooted in the Sainte-Chapelle of the Château de Vincennes . Faced with such a monumental piece made by hand, the story of this legendary queen weaving her web for three years to thwart the advances of her suitors, does not seem very far away... For three years, the workshop of small hands of Joana Vasconcelos was also busy with the task, embroidering and knitting several tens of thousands of leaves embellished with pearls and rhinestones to create this imposing Tree of Life. Celebrated throughout the world for her prodigious Valkyries with sprawling protuberances inspired by Nordic mythology, the artist this time relied on an episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses , in which Daphne changes into a laurel to escape Apollo. Like Arachne, Joana Vasconcelos in turn weaves the prettiest of reinterpretations in this jewel of Gothic art built to house the relics of the Passion of Christ.
