"The other coronation" rediscovered at the Henri-Cartier Bresson foundation
When looking at the ranking of the most watched programs in history, the over-representation of events linked to the British royal family is striking: the burial of Elizabeth II, the wedding of Prince William and the funeral of Lady Di occupy the three first places with several billion spectators each across the world, proof of the attention crystallized around this family. On the occasion of the coronation of the new King Charles III, the Henri-Cartier Bresson Foundation looks back on "another coronation" which also triggered popular enthusiasm: that of King George VI.
What interested the photographer was less the sight of the royal family than that of the people watching her in the streets of London. He was thus surprised by the ingenuity shown by this people to attend this event in an optimal way. While some took advantage of their audacity to access hidden spots, others carried grandmothers and children next to those who, equipped with a pocket mirror adorned it to make it a goal. All in a decor that seems so electric that it makes us forget that the image is inert. It is all the genius of Henri-Cartier Bresson that you will be able to find in his foundation from May 5th.
