Nothing predestined these works to one day be brought together. And yet, the Center Pompidou offers us a unique dive into the captivating world of photographic representations of humankind in the 20th and 21st centuries, by comparing photographs from its prestigious collection with those of the collector and man of cinema, Marin Karmitz, bringing an intimate and personal dimension to the exhibition. An original encounter in some 500 photographs, historical or contemporary, which questions our perception of the body, raising questions about the place of the individual in modern society and the role of the photographer in the construction of the identities he captures. Beyond the conventional classifications of portraits, self-portraits, nudes, humanist photography, the hanging challenges conventions and here seeks to reveal the particularities of the artists by exploring the surprising correspondences between their approaches. Photographers' shared obsessions are revealed in a web of intriguing interconnections, creating a visual experience that questions us about the power of the image in constructing our perception of the human body.
