100 years of Surrealism: the Imagine! at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
Until July 21, 2024
Will you succumb to the surreal fever that is sweeping Brussels? One hundred years after the publication of the Manifesto written by André Breton, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium present all the symptoms of temporary madness. Simple mirage or true hallucinatory odyssey, this exuberant exhibition immediately plunges us into a waking dream, guiding us step by step into the labyrinths of the subconscious of the greatest artists. Imagine the metaphysical worlds of Giorgio de Chirico meeting the fantastical illusions of Max Ernst, the fiery constellations of Joan Miró colliding with the trick work of Man Ray and the magical realism of Paul Delvaux unraveling the mysteries of Marion's suspended dreamscapes Adnams. Paintings, sculptures, objects, assemblages and photographs interact here in a ballet of hypnotizing works, while the museum, prey to the delirious poetry of Salvador Dalí and the mythological creatures of the bewitching Leonor Fini, sets out in pursuit of chimeras of surrealism. In this sublime monster hunt, elephants with gossamer legs cross paths with a sleeping Medusa and encounter the inanimate body of Orpheus who has reached the end of his carnal and spiritual journey between two worlds. What if the best way to resist this surreal madness was to give in to it?
