The rediscovery of a watercolor by Turner, sold at auction for thousands!
For 30 years, an English family in Wales ate dinner every evening in front of a Turner drawing without having the slightest idea. Purchased a few years earlier in a vacant house in a Georgian manor, the owners had noticed the signature without trying to verify its authorship. In 2022, during a visit to Saint David’s Cathedral, it seemed obvious to them. They hurry home, open their computers and go to the Tate Britain website. In one of Turner's sketchbooks, a sketch of the cathedral eerily matches the drawing on their wall. They contacted the curator of the Clore Gallery who confirmed to them that the watercolor and the notes were indeed by the hand of the British painter. News that delighted the whole little family, because their wallets were well filled! This watercolor, found in the borders of Wales, was sold at auction for $37,000.
The watercolor, which Turner created at the age of 20, transcribes the artist's taste for architecture, light effects and natural phenomena. According to Patricia Cross, this piece is “a wonderful example of his architectural drawing in which he demonstrates his extraordinary attention to detail and imaginative understanding of light and darkness.” Turner's work gradually abandoned monumental buildings to turn towards picturesque landscapes.
