Did you say icons? Exhibition Icons, Fantasy Images at the Epinal Image Museum
Epinal Image Museum
Until September 22, 2024
What could be the common point between Joan of Arc and Marylin Monroe? Between Che, Christ, or the Beatles? Our societies are teeming with stars and celebrities, but going from the rank of idol to that of icon is a much rarer thing. Eternal, the image of the latter far exceeds the human being who was its source, transcending it to rise into a separate universe, that of myths and legends. From Johnny Hallyday to Napoleon, from Brigitte Bardot to the gods of the stadium, this refreshing exhibition dissects these great immortal names in detail, comparing popular images with photographs, sculptures, paintings, but also musical or literary works. How much did the media cover Beatlemania? Is it still possible to create your own legend, as Napoleon did in his time? Would Marilyn Monroe have aroused as much fascination without this tragic ending? And would Che have remained so famous without his assassination, elevating him to the rank of martyr? Between fantasy and reality, this exhibition comes at the right time in a society governed by the power of images, shock, doctored, retouched, struggling to emerge in the media floods... After all, an icon only becomes one if we look at it.
