What if haute couture became a space for artistic and political expression? This question finds a vibrant answer in the installation of the sets for the Dior haute couture show, visible until June 30 at the Rodin Museum. The show, orchestrated by Maria Grazia Chiuri, merges Dior's creations with the iconic works of Faith Ringgold, a feminist artist and activist.
Faith Ringgold, who died in April 2024 at the age of 93, dedicated her life to questioning perceptions of African-American identity and gender equality. Her rich and diverse work incorporates elements from her series “Freedom Woman Now” and “Woman Free Yourself,” as well as mosaics created for the Civic Center L.A. Subway Commission, which pay homage to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The scenography of the Dior haute couture fall-winter 2024-2025 fashion show, installed in the sculpture garden of the Rodin Museum, features 32 hand-made panels, creating a dialogue between the couture creations of Maria Grazia Chiuri and the works of Ringgold . This ephemeral decor, accessible with the museum entrance ticket, invites us to a unique immersion, combining the art of couture and committed art.
The banners “Freedom Woman Now” and “Woman Free Yourself” adorn the exterior of the installation, recalling Ringgold’s activist commitments. This installation demonstrates Dior's commitment to highlighting feminine art, a central theme for Chiuri, the first woman at the head of the Dior collections since 1946. You have until Sunday to discover this experience which blurs boundaries between disciplines and celebrates freedom of movement and female emancipation.
