Puy de Lumières: light show at Puy-en-Velay

Summer 2024 marks the long-awaited return of the Puy de Lumières show, a dazzling celebration of the historical and natural heritage of Puy-en-Velay. From July 5, at nightfall, visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a universe where architecture mixes with the magic of lights to offer a unique sensory experience. This event, which lasts until midnight, sets the city and its surroundings ablaze, illuminating nine emblematic sites through spectacular scenographies.

Le Puy-en-Velay, recognized as a starting point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, sees its rich architectural heritage magnified in the light of modern technology. From the first moments of dusk, Notre-Dame Cathedral, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, stands like a luminous beacon, its ancestral stones telling a new story, that of light and shadow, faith and transcendence.

Another jewel, the Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe rock, awakens from its volcanic sleep. This 82 meter neck, an imposing vestige of ancient magmatic activity, becomes the scene of luminous eruptions, projecting images of lava and fire which seem to reanimate the dormant volcano. It is a true metamorphosis, where the mineral ignites in a hypnotic dance of light.

Beyond the architectural marvels, the Puy de Lumières spectacle extends to the banks of the Loire at Brives-Charensac, offering a breathtaking natural setting where water and light interact harmoniously. The shimmering reflections on the river amplify the experience, transforming each wave into a shimmering burst that captures and diffuses the projected colors.

Since its first edition in 2017, Puy de Lumières has established itself as an unmissable event, each year redesigning the nocturnal face of Puy-en-Velay with ever more daring and poetic scenographies, creating a show that seduces as much by its technicality as well as its ability to move. The town of Puy-en-Velay, with its historic monuments and its natural setting shaped by volcanism, becomes the cradle of a dialogue between the past and the present, between stone and light, offering all visitors an experience unforgettable.
