Why is clothing so fascinating in Delacroix's work? The sumptuous drapes, rich textures and vibrant colors of clothing in Delacroix's works undress the characters to reveal their personality, rank or social status. Through an exceptional selection of paintings, drawings and studies, this exhibition highlights how the great master used fabric to accentuate the expression and narration of his greatest masterpieces.

In Liberty Leading the People, the clothes tell as much as the bodies themselves, sometimes even more than the expressions on the faces, the intensity of the tragedy that is playing out. The contrast between the worn fabrics of the insurgents, and the partial nudity of the allegorical figure of Liberty, embodying purity and determination, creates a striking tension between strength and vulnerability, making the clothes the true protagonists of the story. The artist himself attached notable importance to the choice of his outfits, taking care of his elegance in the smallest details, even wearing a large scarf as his signature. In his compositions, Delacroix places the depth of colors, the finesse of embroidery, the richness of a fabric in the foreground, slipping in clues here and there about the intimacy of his characters.
