Pyrotechnics take over Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey
MONT-SAINT-MICHEL ABBEY
Until August 31, 2026
An ode to nature with gunpowder.
It is one of the most visited monuments in France,, an architectural marvel suspended between sky and tide. Thirteen centuries of construction
piled up on a granite rock, from pre-Romanesque to Flamboyant Gothic, crowned by the golden spire of the archangel. This summer, for the first time,, the abbey is hosting a major contemporary art installation as part of Normandy Impressionist 2026.
Did you know?
The archangel Michael is said to have appeared in a dream to Bishop Aubert of Avranches in 708, ordering him to build a sanctuary on the rock. When Aubert hesitated, the archangel is said to have pierced his skull with a finger to convince him – the pierced skull is kept at the Basilica of Avranches.
Zoom in...Radiance of Spring - Cai Guo-Qiang
The Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, a world master of pyrotechnic art,, has taken over the abbey with paintings created using gunpowder. Works born from controlled combustion – a spectacular gesture between destruction and creation – resonating with the verticality of the Mount.
