Mais qui est donc Jean Ranc ? Ce nom vous est sûrement inconnu et pourtant, cet illustre peintre né à Montpellier et spécialisé dans le portrait des rois, a été l’élève de Hyacinthe Rigaud, célèbre portraitiste de la cour de Louis XIV. Il a lui-même tiré le portrait du jeune Louis XV avant d’être appelé par le roi d’Espagne Philippe V, petit-fils de Louis XIV, pour devenir le portraitiste officiel de la cour, dévelopant un langage pictural raffiné, au service du prestige de ses commanditaires. Des pièces majeures de l’artiste sont exposées, dont l’huile sur toile Vertumne et Pomone, sujet mythologique représentant Vertumne, dieu du jardin et du vin, qui parvient à séduire la nymphe Pomone en prenant l’apparence d’une vieille femme.
