The wild and unconventional history of women: the feminist constellation of the Funambule Montmartre
Le Funambule-Montmartre Theatre
Until April 16, 2023
The play in a nutshell: A young woman delves into a history book bequeathed to her recently deceased grandmother, a historian. She decides to give voice to the forgotten women of past centuries.
"Just because things aren't talked about doesn't mean they don't exist." This phrase, projected at the beginning of the performance on the back of the stage, sets the tone. The Mad and Inappropriate History of Women loudly proclaims centuries of struggle, of very existence, erased by history books and collective memory. The play, brought to life by the remarkable Diane Prost, features a young woman who, through a history book, reminds us of the fate of our ancestors. A masterful one-woman show that tackles the condition of women from prehistory to the present day with humor and anger. An explosive and resolutely committed performance in which the young actress slips into the skin of real and fictional women, heterosexual and homosexual, to bring them to life, rehabilitate their memory, and give a voice to those who have been silenced. Diane Prost thus portrays, in turn, Sacha, Cornelia, Chlamydia, Joan of Arc, Olympe de Gouges... but also the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose pronouncements on women are simply chilling. Emotion permeates the entire play, from Joan of Arc's trial to Olympe de Gouges's plea shortly before her execution, and the speeches of anonymous women burdened by their circumstances. A moving story that reaches its climax when the young actress stumbles upon her grandmother's final confessions.
