Edmond", d'Alexis Michalik au Théâtre du Palais-Royal

The Théâtre du Palais-Royal invites you to attend the irresistible performance of Edmond, the famous play having already garnered no less than 5 Molières! In this most epic adventure, Edmond Rostand is still young but already has a lot of anxiety, notably that of the blank page. However, he suddenly and passionately begins to write a play that no one believes. And yet...

December 1897, Paris.
Edmond Rostand is not yet thirty years old but already has two children and a lot of anxiety. He hasn't written anything for two years. In desperation, he proposed to the great Constant Coquelin a new play, a heroic comedy, in verse, for the holidays. Only problem: it is not yet written. Ignoring the whims of the actresses, the demands of his Corsican producers, the jealousy of his wife, the romantic affairs of his best friend and the lack of enthusiasm of all those around him, Edmond begins to write this play which no one believes. For the moment, he only has the title: Cyrano de Bergerac.

After Le Porteur d’Histoire and Le Cercle des Illusionnistes, the author – director at 8 Molières returns to recount the triumphant and legendary premiere of Cyrano de Bergerac. Edmond, with its twelve actors on stage, is “a real troupe theater” reminiscent of the great theatrical epics of the 19th century. A whirlwind of laughter and emotions!

Alexis Michalik lifts the curtain for us on the greatest success of French theater.

Throughout the performance, balanced between 1897 and 2022, the audience frolics in the famous Parisian theaters such as the Comédie Française, the Porte Saint-Martin and of course the Palais-Royal. Accompanied by his troupe of actors who are as talented as they are energetic, the director takes us on a whirlwind journey through the crazy story of Cyrano de Bergerac’s writing.

Like Edmond in his time, Alexis Michalik is a lover of theater, one who understands the creators transports us to the Belle Époque with this intoxicating choir bringing together on stage no less than 30 different roles. The settings change so quickly that we don't have time to get attached to them, leaving plenty of room for gags, emotions and the characters' repartee. Despite an eponymous play, there is no room for a star because Cyrano's premiere is not the story of one man but of all those who made him legendary. While the names Jeanne, Léo, Lucien or Maria may not mean anything to you, you will learn to love them and they will inspire you as much as they inspired the author himself. By deconstructing the theater, while paying homage to Rostand's famous tirades, this play will delight those in the know and will convince the naive.
