In Corps extrêmes, Rachid Ouramdane makes about ten dancers soar in a suspended moment
Théâtre National Chaillot
Until June 24, 2022

A high-flying show has never been more aptly named. In Extreme Bodies, Rachid Ouramdane makes his talented acrobats fly with two sports champions, for a moment suspended between earth and sky. We went to the premiere, and here's what we thought.
It all begins with a climbing wall, off-white in color and monumental in size. When 7:30 p.m. strikes, the video takes over the stage, projecting impressive images onto the climbing wall. Vertiginous cliffs, mountain landscapes, and other sensations of the void then appear before our eyes, as highline champion Nathan Paulin enters the scene. First on screen, where he recounts the difficulties and the incredibly euphoric aspects of his profession, then on the stage of the Théâtre Chaillot, or rather, we should say, in the air. On his suspended rope, there he is, soaring, walking delicately like a tightrope walker, light as a feather. A few musical notes and a graceful stroll later, he is joined by nine acrobats, who make a majestic entrance from the heights of the climbing wall. What follows is an hour of aerial feats and acrobatics whose only possible adjective is majestic.
In Extreme Bodies, Rachid Ouramdane immerses us in the duality between life and death, between heaven and earth, between grounding and flight. A powerful opposition that we relish as the talented artists perform acrobatics, leaps into the void, and handstands in midair. Unimaginable figures, true technical feats that never fail to elicit gasps of amazement from the audience in the magnificent theater. And as time goes on, the jumps become higher, the climbs more perilous, and the bodies more intertwined. For this is where the true power of the show lies: the chorus formed by the acrobats.

By offering a fresh perspective on sporting disciplines, the troupe manages to combine extreme sports, acrobatics, and contemporary dance, all set to an intoxicating soundtrack. A fantastic blend that never grows old and whets our appetite for more heights, more balance, and more feats. Combining a love for the environment with an incredible physical lightness, the challenge is met: flight, weightlessness, and suspension are all present in this splendid tableau that reconciles muscular strength with undeniable sensitivity to push the boundaries of human capability.
By transcending notions of fear and risk, Extreme Bodies reveals a profoundly moving intimacy, a trust beyond imagination, and the most demanding control. A powerful interplay unfolds between the external world, through videos featuring the highline champion and the renowned Swiss climber Nina Caprez, and the inner world where one can almost hear the held breaths of these accomplished dancers. In short: this is yet another magnificent success for Chaillot, which, for a few exceptional performances, becomes the stage for an existential quest between bodies that blend in harmony and hearts that beat as one.
