Opening of the Espace Henri Landier in video: the virtuoso engraver in the spotlight in a brand new place

Espace Henri Landier
Opening November 10

He is one of the greatest current artists in Montmartre. Henri Landier, master of color, is today dedicated to a brand new exhibition space in Paris, at the foot of the Butte, a few steps from his historic workshop. Here, for this inaugural exhibition, however, it is not a question of paintings but rather of engravings, these sensitive and delicate prints of which Landier has had the secret for more than 70 years. Alone in his studio, for hours on end, the artist engraves his plates line by line by hand, before inking them using his two-ton hand press, as Rembrandt and Dürer did in their time. An eminently technical gesture, mastered to perfection, to allow only the spontaneity of a moment taken from life to shine through. The result is there, virtuoso prints bringing light out of the darkness, in subtle tangles of lines, giving life to the shadows of hurried passers-by, and brightness to the forgotten alleys of the capital. The artist travels through the neighborhoods of Paris, offering views and perspectives, immortalizing in his features the multiple faces of Parisian architecture and its inhabitants. Parisian by heart and by birth, Henri Landier knows the smallest corners of the capital having surveyed, drawn and engraved them many times. From rue Saint-Vincent where he lived from the age of 17 to the banks of the Seine via the unmissable Sacré-Cœur, from post-war Paris to today's Paris, the artist sketched the City of Lights from every angle, sketching through his work the contours of the Parisian urban imagination. The etchings, aquatints and other extremely rare wood-engravings on display here bear witness to the master's talent, while his recent creations in soft, pastel tones create a disturbing bridge with his greatest paintings, definitively anchoring Henri Landier among the greatest artists. complete of his time.

If we know about Henri Landier his poetic representations and joyful aspects of daily life, its dazzling views of the capital or its captivating seascapes, this gallery, entirely dedicated to his rich production of prints, sheds light on a whole section of his work recognized by collectors, by highlighting some emblematic pieces of his engraved work.

This first hanging celebrates the unique know-how of an outstanding engraver who prints on an authentic Ledeuil, a 19th century hand press. A two-ton mass whose wheel he turns to ink his works, pressing more or less hard to obtain the result he expects, like Rembrandt and Dürer in their time. Of the 2000 prints created by the artist over the last 70 years, Espace Landier presents around sixty, selected with the greatest attention. Meticulous works, like his famous Darkness engravings inherited from the 1960s in which Landier expresses the dark and solitary thoughts of a post-war Paris, but where the light is fortunately never far away... Over the course of his career, the artist has multiplied views and perspectives, sketching Parisian architecture on every street corner. The etchings, aquatints and other extremely rare wood-engravings on display here bear witness to the virtuosity of the master, while his recent creations in soft, pastel tones, like his latest engraving, “Julien and his violin in the sky of Paris”, take us into his abundant imagination. This new Parisian address constitutes a perfect introduction to discover the creations of this great French painter and engraver.

Parisian by heart and by birth, Henri Landier knows the smallest corners of the capital having surveyed, drawn and engraved them many times. From rue Saint-Vincent where he lived from the age of 17 to the quays of the Seine, via the unmissable Sacré-Cœur, the artist has sketched the City of Lights from every angle, becoming the main provider of the Parisian urban imagination. This view of the Place des Abbesses, teeming with details, is no exception to the rule. With a lively but controlled gesture, the painter immortalizes a scene from everyday life, paying as much attention to the architecture of the buildings as to the appearance of passers-by.
