Exhibition Female surrealism? at the Museum of Montmartre: pioneers
Wives, muses, lovers… Has surrealism only devoured women and collected mistresses? The Musée de Montmartre proves the opposite with this committed exhibition narrating an unknown chapter of modern art during which women, driven by an absolute quest for freedom, found their way among the avant-gardes and displayed themselves close to surrealism. Provocative, sulphurous and emancipated, the exhibition which aims to be as rich as this current synonymous with all fantasies was, invites around fifty free spirits to come and testify to their role in modernity. On our way to the female unconscious, we thus cross paths with the rebellious Lee Miller, American photographer and reporter to whom we owe the rediscovery of the principle of solarization. We guess some fragments of the mystical Dora Maar in her mythical photomontages with strange compositions before meeting the insatiable and elusive Judit Reigl. The bewitching Leonor Fini submits men here to the gaze of women, while Toyen mixes the dreamlike nature of her paintings with her erotic visions. Cartography of a fragmented movement, the exhibition reveals a completely different history of surrealism where Woman is king.
