The Three Musketeers returns to the cinema with d'Artagnan

From the Louvre to Buckingham Palace, from the underbelly of Paris to the siege of La Rochelle... In a Kingdom divided by religious wars and threatened with invasion by England, a handful of men and women will cross their swords and link their destiny to that of France.

Should we go see this first part of The Three Musketeers? This umpteenth adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' masterpiece raised a lot of expectations... and rightly so! You had to be simply crazy to tackle this sacred monster of French literature, adapted time and time again for the big screen. No matter, the director of Eiffel Martin Bourboulon and the screenwriters of Prénom, Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, chose to put the heroes of Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, in a big-budget diptych where romance overlaps with court intrigues. Epic and punctuated by beautiful duels, this new version therefore benefits from the advantages of a major American production (72 million euros on the clock) and manages with a certain panache to breathe new life into swashbuckling films. Even if we regret a lack of audacity in the production, this historical fresco comes out with honors thanks to its natural settings, its sumptuous period costumes and its 5-star cast. Vincent Cassel, Romain Duris and Pio Marmaï respond to a young François Civil, fiery and ready to do anything to join the Musketeers of King Louis XIII, played by a deliberately apathetic and sluggish Louis Garrel, who is simply irresistible. The sovereign nevertheless sees himself stolen by a perfect Eva Green in her role as an unscrupulous spy, the ultimate archetype of the femme fatale who will be at the center of all the shenanigans during the second part of the saga scheduled for next December.
