Exhibition Le Spleen d'Ulysse by Nikos Aliagas at the Abbaye de Jumièges
Jumièges Abbey
From June 8 to January 7, 2024
“Happy is he who like Ulysses has made a beautiful journey…” Guided by the stories of Homer, Nikos Aliagas takes us to the ends of the world for a modest and monochrome exhibition on his native land. The fruit of several years of wandering, this journey across the Mediterranean follows the legendary figure of Ulysses, mythical king of Ithaca in search of truth and immortality during his long Odyssey. In the harsh and merciless light of day, the photographer explores the contemporary myth of the Greek hero through contact with strangers and anonymous personalities encountered along his path. The star host of the small screen captures there the faces of men hollowed by the years, hands sculpted by effort, lives engraved by the sun. Wrinkles, imperfections, irregularities of the skin... If his black and white images are always as implacable with reality, they also speak of the joy, the melancholy, the solitude of some. A silent song with universal virtues, the Spleen of Ulysses therefore gives its models a new glory similar to our modern icons. In a geographical as well as an introspective journey, Nikos Aliagas sketches here the pangs and the beauty of existence in the face of the adversity of the passing of time.
