Paris, 1905. Faced with the strident colors of Matisse, Camoin and Derain, the critics fuse, acid. Some evoke "a can of paint thrown in the face of the public", while others disapprove of these "delirious brushes" and these "shapeless swatches". The scandal reaches its climax with the formula of Louis Vauxcelles thus giving its name to an ephemeral school, without rules, manifestos or prohibitions.
More than a century later, the Fauves come out of their cage and roar at the Pierre Gianadda Foundation. Rich in a hundred incandescent canvases and a rare selection of sculptures and ceramics by Kees van Dongen or Maurice de Vlaminck, this flamboyant exhibition looks back on the revolutionary and radical awareness of a generation of artists with a fiery temperament. . The Foundation is now resuscitating this orgy of pure colors in a visual firework display. The spontaneous, powerful and purplish landscapes of Delaunay respond to the feverish views of Dufy. With the same passion, we follow the "girls" or "drunkenness" of Georges Rouault, the prostitutes and acrobats of Picasso for a time sensitive to the cries of wild animals, before losing ourselves in the ardent and inflamed compositions of Braque.
