The history of the Regency exhibited at the Carnavalet museum
4
September 1715. Louis XIV dies in Versailles after more than 72 years of reign. The king is dead, long live the king ? Not so simple: the monarch leaves behind a kingdom in debt and an heir too young to rule. This is where the nephew of the deceased, Duke Philippe d'Orléans, comes into play. The Regency can begin! The Carnavalet museum returns today to this forgotten episode of the Great History of France during which the crown returned to the capital after 33 years of exile, once again making Paris the epicenter of French political, economic and cultural life. Rich in more than 200 masterpieces and a rare selection of pieces of antique furniture, this royal exhibition brings together the most brilliant minds of the Age of Enlightenment, from Voltaire to Marivaux via Montesquieu and Watteau, to resuscitate this turbulent golden age punctuated by resounding twists such as the terrible bankruptcy of 1720. Paintings, sculptures, graphic works and precious decorative elements complete the picture in order to reflect the changes in society at a time when Paris stands out in Europe as one of the largest capitals.
