“Admit the banality, accept the ugliness of the world and do something with it.” Funny maxim that Harry Gruyaert follows, but it is clear that it suits him perfectly. The Ball is witness to this. Close to the American pioneers of color such as William Eggleston and Stephen Shore, the 82-year-old Belgian photographer, member of the prestigious Magnum agency since 1981, leaves his mark on each of his appearances. This flamboyant exhibition is no exception. Under the guise of a retrospective, this moving monograph brings together more than 80 prints made between 1974 and 1994. Photos of a carefree cacophony of joy, promise and solitude which are distinguished by the sharpness of the image, the intensity of the solid colors and saturation. A sad and beautiful work at the same time, freezing on glossy paper the absurdity of life.
