The Stein/Picasso friendship on video, the new exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg
It is the story of an extraordinary friendship, between two icons of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein, the one who was his first patron. The Luxembourg Museum takes an offbeat look at the Spanish master, placing this relationship at the heart of the first artistic avant-garde of the last century. We are here, in Paris, Picasso is a young Spaniard who has recently arrived in the capital. He meets Gertrude Stein who is not yet the great figure of American literature that she will become. It's obvious. At her home, Picasso discovered the paintings of Cézanne and Matisse. He decides to paint his portrait... After 90 posing sessions, the work is finally completed. The two artists have tamed each other. What followed was a flawless friendship and an exceptional artistic collaboration, mixing the words of one with the colors of the other, until laying the foundations of a new artistic language. Cubism was born.
