Immerse yourself in the fascinating work of a master of color. Henri Landier to whom we owe some of the most beautiful views of the capital, is today once again celebrated in a tribute exhibition highlighting his illustrious past as an engraver. Nestled just a few steps from his historic workshop located at the foot of the Butte Montmartre, the exhibition retraces seventy years of virtuoso practice, between shadow and light.

Of the 2000 prints, etchings, aquatints, woodcuts, lithographs, screen prints and monotypes produced during his brilliant career, only around fifty original works have been selected here with the greatest care. Among them, we find the darkness and harshness of his beginnings with the so-called series of darkness, we get lost in the Parisian streets before discovering the luminous works of Provence, seascapes, sunny still lifes, Venice and Prague. From poetic and mysterious images of a post-war Paris to joyful visions of a setting in the south of France, the exhibition masterfully takes us back into the engraved work of this distant heir of Rembrandt.

Line for line

Does this silhouette mean nothing to you? Henri Landier revisits here one of the most famous self-portraits in the history of art by lending his features to the mysterious Van Eyck. If the pose is essentially the same, the artist allows himself more fantasy in the colorimetry by wearing a large grenadine red turban and a floral ensemble in mauve tones.

Head for color!

Like Matisse before him, Henri Landier also tried his hand at still life, favoring the reassuring motif of colocynths. Seduced by the round and generous shape of cucurbits, the painter finds here the means to express all his love for color, exalting the yellow tones of these small decorative vegetables in an aquatint engraving that does not lack panache!

Mystery in Venice

Venice, its canals, its gondolas... and this elusive character levitating in the air. What is happening here ? What scene are we witnessing? Behind its apparent tranquility, this watered-down landscape in pastel tones hides a dark mystery: an unexplained angel's jump into a theater setting typical of La Sérénissime.
