Views of the Alphonse Mucha exhibition at the Hôtel de Caumont
Caumont Hotel
From November 17, 2023 to March 24, 2024
Another exhibition on Mucha? What if this changed the situation? Beware of those who would dare to summarize the work of the king of the printed poster with his pastel colors and his slender silhouettes! The master of Art Nouveau leaves a legacy much more complex than it seems and proves it in this major exhibition, rich in 120 unsuspected masterpieces, with his monumental paintings and private photos. Far from the golden image of the ethereal nymphs of the Belle Époque, the Hôtel de Caumont dares to venture into the unexplored peaks of the Mucha aesthetic. Behind the tapered lines of his arabesques, a completely different face of this Czech artist, a lover of women, emerges: a committed painter, active freemason and ardent defender of the Slavic people. If the exhibition does not forget to celebrate the glorious past of the star poster artist of Parisian theaters, the museum risks a symbolic and allegorical rereading of his patriotic work while revealing for the first time to the public eye his little-known work of photographer. In his Parisian studio located on rue du Val-de-Grâce, Mucha captures his models in daring settings before making them sumptuous icons, perfect incarnations of an inaccessible feminine ideal.
