At a time when representations of the Orient by French artists were widely criticized for their colonial and orientalist bias, Étienne Dinet was unanimously appreciated by the Algerian people. It is therefore quite natural that the IMA Tourcoing has dedicated an exhibition to it with exotic charm. Thus, from the moment we see these paintings in warm colors, which give them an almost sensual aspect, we understand the reasons for its success with a population that the painter knew how to embrace down to the smallest details. The artist, through his mastery, thus proves that the connection to a people, to the purity of their faith and to their art of daily living, responds to a logic which goes far beyond simple blood ties...
