The School in the Middle Ages exhibition at the Jean Sans Peur tower
Who had this crazy idea one day to invent school? It’s that sacred Charlemagne! Ironically, the myth of the Carolingian king as the founding father of the school would simply be... false. In any case, this is what we learn from this educational exhibition which looks in detail at the schooling of children in the medieval period, from very small school to university. Through the selection of 80 documents, manuscripts and illuminations, directly inherited from the Middle Ages, the Tour Jean Sans Peur provides a remedial course to all schoolchildren eager for knowledge by showing them old classroom materials such as the abacus (the calculator of the time) or by teaching them the education of the little nobles who were forced to wear armor from the age of 7!
