Exhibition Old hulls and young reefs at the FRAC Île-de-France
FRAC Île-de-France
From March 16 to July 21, 2024
In art, the body becomes an object, support, material. Everything becomes permitted: sublimate it, exploit it, preserve it from others and sometimes from ourselves. In this audacious double exhibition, around thirty young artists investigate the question of the fleshly envelope, that which adapts, which we intoxicate, which we wish to surpass, transform, metamorphose. An essential component of human nature, the body is the basis of all things for Bruno Botella, who literally pulled out his hair to design the molding of his skull. Conversely, other artists here favor absence such as Prune Phi who imagines an invisible, silent and dematerialized conversation between the dead and the living. The body becomes dust again at Alex Ayed, when Hedwige Houben gives birth to uncertain forms, sculptures of flesh in perpetual mutation. Without following any hierarchy, the non-linear stories fit together here revealing an impressive heterogeneous corpus, sometimes flirting with science fiction, moving from the epic and shimmering canvases of Ibrahim Meïté Sikely to the organic silhouettes of Jeanne Vicerial.
