Video: a private tour of the exhibition In Léonce Rosenberg's apartment at the Picasso Museum
In the Rosenberg family, we knew Paul, the famous art dealer but not necessarily his brother Léonce. The Picasso Museum in Paris invites us to enter the sumptuous apartments of the man who was briefly Picasso's dealer between the wars, a residence which has now disappeared, reconstituted for this sumptuous exhibition.
Here, there are no paintings by the Catalan master that we will have to look for in the permanent spaces of the museum, but true masterpieces of the period, created especially for this mysterious merchant by his greatest artists to decorate his splendid apartment. Parisian of 360 m². More than a place to live, Léonce Rosenberg installs a total work of art in the heart of the 16th arrondissement, bringing the paintings into dialogue with creations of old and contemporary furniture. Living room, smoking room, bedrooms, eleven rooms are inhabited by unique artistic souls, Max Ernst, Georges Braque, Francis Picabia, Fernand Léger, Giorgio De Chirico... Each artist has his own unique piece.
A refuge for all the avant-gardes of the time, between the survival of cubism and abstraction, an ode to color, the emergence of surrealism against a backdrop of a return to classical traditions... The stock market crash of 1929 precipitated the ruin of the merchant, dispersing this collection of extraordinary works to the four corners of the world, today brought together again in this very beautiful exhibition.
