Everything that's small is cute ! We are obviously not the only ones to know the adage like the back of our hand: Clavé Fine Art once again celebrates the small format in all its splendor with works “as big as they need to be” . Nestled in the former workshop of the sculptor César, the gallery brings together pieces here that are sometimes tiny, but signed by big names in art history such as Jean Dubuffet, Germaine Richier, Pablo Picasso and Zao Wou-Ki. Between Yves Klein's lightning blue sponge sculpture and Giorgio Morandi's barely sketched still life, this lovely exhibition invites us to lean in, even get closer, to contemplate the many details hidden behind these works discreet. The small formats of these great masters are matched here by contemporary creations among which we find the telluric ceramics of Léo Nataf and the small papier-mâchés of Claudine Drai, reminding us of one essential thing: small things still have great days ahead of them.
Did you know?
At César, everything is a question of scale. The master of compression and expansion thus took part in the game of small formats before thinking big, very big. The smallest version of its famous Pouce does not exceed 30 centimeters, while its counterpart erected in the La Défense district peaks at 12 meters high and weighs no less than 18 tonnes.
