Ger Luijten exhibition: A passionate eye, Twelve years of acquisitions at the Fondation Custodia
11
Without his discerning eye, we would undoubtedly have missed many masterpieces. The immensely missed Ger Luijten, soul of the Custodia Foundation, led this confidential institution in the capital for twelve years with the same fervor. Almost two years after his tragic disappearance, this cabinet of curiosities nestled in the heart of Paris reveals the legacy of an enlightened scholar, curious spirit and great connoisseur of the Dutch Golden Age, who never ceased to honor the work and memory of the collector and founder Frits Lugt:“I try to get into [sa] my head, to imagine how he would have reacted to a work”. Of the 10,000 pieces that have entered the collections since 2010, this moving exhibition reveals a veritable anthology of one hundred and forty treasures. Between a masterful sheet of The Triumph of Neptune in pen and brown ink and a precious self-portrait of a disciple of Rembrandt, the Custodia Foundation invites us to linger on Ger Luijten's very first acquisition: the mysterious portrait of a publisher under Louis XIII. Unlike his famous friends Simon Vouet or the painter of kings Antoon van Dyck, François Langlois was neither a designer nor an engraver but a print dealer. A real coup, this first purchase paints the portrait of two men, that of an esteemed 13th century publisher and that of a passionate director to whom the Foundation pays a moving tribute.
