Exhibition Beyond the Gaze of Jacques Renoir at the Château-Musée Grimaldi
Grimaldi Castle-Museum
Until June 16, 2024
Should we see in this photo of three young dancers in white tutus, frozen in their movement, a trace of the impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir? With a name like this, it's difficult for photographer, director and cameraman Jacques Renoir not to cultivate this insatiable eye and attention to detail. However, the prodigal great-grandson invites us to change our outlook and consider photography beyond images, heritage and traditions. Let's get closer and observe: the naked bodies in the windows immortalized in waiting, the still smoking matches, the branches of the olive trees of his childhood rocked by the wind... Let's change our perspective. In front of Jacques Renoir's lens, the solitary gesture of the selfie becomes a collective work, while the posters torn from the Paris metro form a tattered picture revealing the layers of an ephemeral and consumer society.
Rich in more than 200 photos in color and black and white, this generous exhibition is made up above all of materials, giving us to see and think about portraits, landscapes, studio views and moments of life frozen for the 'eternity.
