Spotlight on the work of Julien Creuzet, France's representative at the Venice Biennale!
Curtains raised! The Venice Biennale is preparing to welcome, like every year, international artistic excitement. Adriano Pedrosa, the first curator of the Biennale from the southern hemisphere, gave a committed political and social focus to the 2024 edition. The title is an obvious nod to the fluorescent neon work of Marie Fontaine, { 4}Foreigners Everywhere. Echoing this title, France has named an artist who probes questions of otherness and marginality with his poetic verve, Julien Creuzet. Franco-Caribbean, it is in Martinique that the artist's teeming imagination is based. His protean works borrow from music, sculpture, cinema and animation. Julien Creuzet draws on the founding myths of our mixed societies, whose stories he tells. “What does the French Pavilion in Venice and national representation mean? How can we rethink all of this, while being designated as “ultramarine”, having the feeling of belonging to a much more complex French history?” asks the artist-poet. The answer he ends up formulating is that it is above all a question of highlighting the history of these cultures, which has been passed over in silence for too long. The artist evokes “trans-oceanic postcolonial exchanges and their multiple temporalities”. Discover his universe populated by intertwined threads, with a thousand colors and multiple horizons, which pays homage to his heritage. So, let's sing in chorus with Julien Creuzet: “Attila cataract your source at the foot of the green peaks will end in the great blue abyss sea we drowned in the tidal tears of the moon”.
