Discover D-Day at the City of History: unprecedented immersion in the Normandy Landings

13

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, the Cité de l'Histoire inaugurates a new theme, "D-Day", a vibrant and moving commemoration dedicated to the courage of the Allied soldiers. This ambitious exhibition invites us on a true journey through time, immersing us in the heart of the decisive events of June 6, 1944 through a masterful combination of technology and historical storytelling.

The highlight of this experience is a unique video mapping show, integrated into the 360° Ellipse of the Cité de l'Histoire. This immersive device, of remarkable technicality, projects archive images onto the circular walls, recreating the dramatic intensity of the Landings. We are thus immersed in a multisensory experience where images, sounds and emotions merge to bring to life the heroic stories of the time. We find ourselves in the heart of the action, feeling the adrenaline and dedication of the soldiers who fought for freedom.

New exhibition spaces enrich this immersive experience. Among them, a gallery dedicated to the emblematic figures of the D-Day landings and period armored vehicles, in collaboration with World of Tanks, the famous video game. These exhibits provide a fascinating perspective on military strategy and war technologies, while paying tribute to the men and machines who played a crucial role in the operation's success. A map room, equipped with interactive projections, allows us to relive the D-Day maneuvers, offering a strategic perspective of the events.

For younger children, the exhibition presents meticulous and fun reconstructions of the D-Day scenes in LEGO, accompanied by a mediation space offering educational and interactive activities, stimulating their curiosity and understanding of the Second World War.

The interactive timeline “The Corridor of Time” has also been redesigned for this occasion. It highlights fifty key dates and archival images, offering a detailed chronology and overview of the events leading up to the Landings. This educational journey allows us to contextualize Allied operations within the broader framework of the global conflict, thus enriching our understanding.

To complete this immersion, ambulatory shows enliven the City of History, recreating the atmosphere of the Second World War. Presenting vehicles, weapons and period artifacts, these lively and interactive performances allow us to immerse ourselves in the daily lives of soldiers and civilians of the time.
