Philippe Tallis exhibition at the Château de Monte-Cristo
Castle of Monte Cristo
From June 27 to September 22, 2024
Extravagant, fanciful, megalomaniac... There is no shortage of adjectives to describe the personality of Alexandre Dumas, brilliant author of The Three Musketeers. A free spirit endowed with a formidable sense of staging that we find in each of his projects, starting with this one, the most disproportionate of all: the Château de Monte-Cristo. The writer for whom the boundaries between truth and fiction, between reality and imagination, were mere junk, spent lavishly to build, not far from Paris, this earthly paradise surrounded by water. An architectural madness straight out of a novel, composed of a Gothic pavilion serving as a literary bachelor pad and a neo-Renaissance style castle within which the man of letters commissioned an authentic Moorish living room, carved by Tunisian artisans . The English garden sheltered caves, waterfalls, rockeries and more recently, the fabulous world of Tallis. The French painter and sculptor unveils his elegant sculptures of stone, bronze and wood in Dumas' lair, in the very place where the genius of French literature once welcomed his most illustrious guests. Philippe Tallis transforms the rawest materials into a poetic form, just as Dumas had the gift of transforming simple swashbuckling tales into timeless myths.
Mark your calendars!
Every last Sunday of the month, disguised actors come to surprise you during your visit to the estate, immersing you in the life of the castle at the time of Dumas: expect to meet Cardinal de Richelieu, Milady de Winter or D' Artagnan and other illustrious guests taken from the writer's masterpieces.
