Exhibition From Basquiat to Edith Piaf: shared passions at the MUCEM
MUCEM, Marseille - SOUTH
Until September 23, 2024
It’s a unique encounter that we didn’t expect. Two worlds that seemed completely separate meet here, weaving unexpected links between the biggest names in contemporary art and objects from popular Mediterranean traditions. Daniel Buren, Cy Twombly, Christian Boltanski, Louise Bourgeois… these names sound today like the emblems of a bold and provocative contemporary artistic sphere. The most beautiful pieces from the collection of art dealer Yvon Lambert rub shoulders with the ethnographic treasures of the Mucem, weaving a web of poetic and formal resonances between apparently disjointed universes. Here Basquiat's graffiti dialogues with Provençal ex-votos while Warhol's screen prints reveal unexpected affinities with the genre scenes of Provençal master craftsmen, offering us a unique rereading of our universal cultural heritage.
Did you know?Born in Vence, Lambert grew up surrounded by the works of masters like Matisse and Cézanne, influencing his outlook and approach to art. His Parisian gallery became an essential place where he discovered and supported many contemporary artists, establishing lasting friendships and building an exceptional collection.
