This is the story of a forgotten masterpiece. The Ecce Homo – then attributed to a disciple of José de Ribera – was put up for auction in 2021 for the paltry sum of 1,500 euros. Withdrawn from sale at the last minute by the Spanish government, this painting turned out to actually be signed by Caravaggio. Created by the Italian artist between 1605 and 1609 and having belonged to the private collection of Philip IV of Spain, this work is one of the rare sixty paintings known by the artist, giving it inestimable value... Or almost. Its new buyer – whose identity remains secret as does the price of his acquisition – agreed to lend his treasure to the Prado for nine months. A unique opportunity to admire this masterpiece.
