Raymond Depardon has always traveled the world to freeze his time in striking images. His photos don't just capture the moment; they engrave history in the collective memory. This summer, Raymond Depardon will be crowned with an exhibition, celebrating the modern heroism of people in the face of the upheavals of our troubled times. A photograph awakening the memory of an Algeria fighting for its independence; more than an exhibition, Raymond Depardon gives us a window open to the world, a precious testimony to our common history.
In 1961, Raymond Depardon, barely 19 years old, was sent as a photojournalist to Algeria. There, he captured the end of the colonial era during the negotiations of the Evian Accords, rubbing shoulders with the Algerian delegation, and captured its intimacy with rare delicacy. While, almost sixty years later, he wanted to publish these photographs for the first time, Raymond Depardon decided to make a new trip to Algeria to complete them with a “postscript”. In 2019, he photographed Algiers, always in black and white, in its abundant contemporaneity. He also went to Oran for 5 days, where he met the writer Kamel Daoud for long walks in the city. Through these, not only a friendship is born, but also a four-handed book project, where the free and wild texts of the Algerian author mix with the clichés of 1961 and 2019.
