Star & Stone show by Robert Wilson at Rouen Cathedral

Rouen Cathedral
Until September 28, 2024

Under the starry sky of Rouen, Notre-Dame Cathedral, already immortalized by the brushes of Claude Monet, comes alive every summer in a festival of lights and colors. This year, until September 28, 2024, the monument is transformed into a living canvas under the artistic direction of Robert Wilson, emblematic figure of New York avant-garde theater .

The meeting between the Gothic architecture of the cathedral and Wilson's imagination is a visual symphony entitled Star and Stone: A Kind of Love… Some Say. Wilson, a master of light and abstraction, has collaborated with such illustrious figures as Jessye Norman and Willem Dafoe. His creation for Rouen transcends the simple play of light to become a profound reflection on the fragility and beauty of human existence, a theme sublimated by the captivating voice of Isabelle Huppert and the poignant poetry of Maya Angelou.

The facade of the cathedral, decorated with audiovisual projections, is transformed every evening into a grandiose spectacle. Strong and poetic images evoke the suffering and resilience of the city, offering viewers an immersive experience where history and contemporary art come together. The play of light sculpts the details of the building, redefining its contours and revealing new perspectives.

Famous for his theatrical and lyrical works throughout the world, Robert Wilson brings an international dimension and unparalleled artistic depth to Rouen. Its ability to fuse visual and audio creates a perfect symbiosis with the centuries-old architecture of the cathedral, making each projection a work of art in itself. A vibrant tribute to the cathedral, its history and its central role in the cultural heritage of Rouen, offering a new reading of this historic monument in a modern reinterpretation which dialogues with the impressionist masterpieces of Monet while opening up new new paths to contemporary art.
