Tarsila do Amaral exhibition at the Luxembourg Museum
Luxembourg Museum
From October 9 to February 2, 2024
When a star in her native country is only a mysterious stranger in France... If some have already crossed paths with Tarsila do Amaral in Pionnières, the ultra feminine exhibition at the Luxembourg museum, or in The Paris of Modernity at the Petit Palais, many of us are just discovering his name.
Rich in one hundred and fifty paintings, studies and drawings, this major retrospective is responsible for the official presentations with this eminent figure of Brazilian modernism, erudite author of a metaphorical work called “anthropophagous”. Unless proven otherwise, the artist never sketched her adversaries, but rather drew on the indigenous imagination to “devour” the Western colonial culture that she knew only too well. Torn between a rounded, synthetic language and an assumed taste for dreamlike gigantism, the exhibition paints the implicit portrait of a master of modern feminine art who forged his style in the Paris of the 1920s, in contact with Léger, Gleizes or Picasso.
The result is these landscapes with bright colors and clear lines, intertwined with evocative and lush compositions definitively blurring the boundaries of modern art between two continents.
