Alaïa & Kuramata exhibition at the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation
Azzedine Alaïa Foundation
Until January 12, 2025
Bringing fashion and design into dialogue in an exhibition imbued with elegance and grace. This is the ambition of this daring exhibition, bringing together the fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa and Shiro Kuramata, master of Japanese design. Two visionary creators who come together in their quest to defy the limits of gravity. Here the works challenge and respond to each other in surprising harmony. The subtlety of the transparencies, the refinement of the materials and the radicality of the forms testify to their common desire to create works that defy time and conventions. The lurex knit of a refined dress resonates with the knitted metal of a seat, while the transparent acrylic of a shelf evokes the delicacy of the muslins used by Alaïa. A steel mesh armchair faces a sculptural dress whose silhouette seems to float in the air, the fixed folds of the Oba-Q lamp blend into the immaculate drapes of the designer. Through a rigorous selection of more than twenty pieces of exceptional furniture and objects from Kuramata and around twenty haute couture creations from Alaïa, the exhibition celebrates the heritage and mutual influence of these two geniuses, reminding us that art and fashion, when pushed to their limits, can transcend material boundaries to touch the very essence of beauty.
