We saw and loved: "Clair-Obscur" at the Bourse du Commerce
COMMERCIAL EXCHANGE
From March 4 to August 31, 2026
"This indistinction between night and light, the visible and the invisible, is evident in the works of the collection." Emma Lavigne
Chiaroscuro. A word that immediately evokes Caravaggio, his figures captivated by light, his bodies emerging from the night. A pictorial revolution that, in the 17th century, transformed painting by making shadow a place of truth.
The Bourse de Commerce extends its legacy today, not as a quotation, but as a language that remains active. The exhibition brings together some twenty modern and contemporary artists from the Pinault Collection and explores how this tension between darkness and light still permeates current artistic creation. Here, chiaroscuro transcends the purely pictorial realm to become a way of looking at the world, its flaws, its murky areas, its inner eruptions. In Victor Man's paintings, light seems absorbed by matter; figures barely emerge, held in a state of uncertainty. Bill Viola's works stretch time, slowly allowing bodies bathed in an almost spiritual light to emerge. Under the dome, Pierre Huyghe's Camata presents a filmed ritual in the Atacama Desert, traversing a cosmic darkness of invisible forces. In contrast, the carte blanche given to Laura Lamiel plays with artificial light, surfaces, and objects in a minimalist style informed by psychoanalysis and cosmology. More than a technique inherited from the past, chiaroscuro appears here as a living principle, constantly oscillating between revelation and concealment. An exhibition that reminds us that our era, too, is often understood at the edge of light.
