General Exhibition at the Cartier Foundation
CARTIER FOUNDATION FOR CONTEMPORARY ART
Until August 23, 2026
For forty years, the Cartier Foundation quietly built its collection. Not through spectacular accumulation, but in the wake of its exhibitions, through encounters, intuitions, and sometimes audacious bets.
Today, for the first time, this collection is revealed in all its scope. As if one were opening the vaults of a treasure chest that had long remained hidden. What is discovered is striking in its visionary coherence. Long before the words “breaking down barriers,” “ecosystems,” and “dialogue of knowledge” became ubiquitous, the Foundation had already opted for a porous collection. Experimental architecture, Indigenous artists, hybridizations between art, design, and craft, dialogues between science and fiction: here, boundaries have never held for long. Panamarenko and his improbable machines, Sarah Sze and her suspended constellations, Ron Mueck and his hyperrealistic presences, Olga de Amaral and her monumental textile landscapes, Bodys Isek Kingelez and his utopian cities…
The Cartier Foundation has often acquired artists before they achieved recognition, supported practices that were then considered marginal, and invited voices from outside the mainstream. It has grown like a living organism, without succumbing to passing fads. The revelation takes on a particular dimension today: these works, removed from their usual dispersal, engage in a dialogue within a setting that reactivates them. We suddenly grasp the power of a collection conceived as a landscape. Not a static museum, but a reservoir of energy. Finally reunited here, these exceptional pieces are proof that a collection can be visionary – and remain so.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Haussmannian building that now houses the Cartier Foundation was built for the 1855 Universal Exhibition. At the end of the 19th century, the Grands Magasins du Louvre department store was already organizing “General Exhibitions” there, spectacular showcases of a world in flux. The current title reactivates this memory.
