At the Edge of the Visible - "Resuming the Melody"
From Pierre Soulages to Hiroshi Sugimoto there is but a step. At the Soulages Museum, the silver prints of the Japanese photographer immediately recall the etchings of the French painter and engraver. Sugimoto asked, "Is it possible for a person today to see the same landscape as the first humans?" It is with this question in mind that a meditative and contemplative journey begins.
Hiroshi Sugimoto's work explores time through images that seem suspended. They oscillate, from one to the next, between repetition and disappearance. Her photographs reveal a silent, almost deserted world, where only ghostly silhouettes of trees remain in the twilight. Frozen in time, they are captured on the verge of disappearing. The strength of her work lies as much in this reflection as in a rigorous mastery of the photographic medium. The exhibition highlights this technical precision while emphasizing the close ties her work maintains with painting, in a genuinely thoughtful dialogue with the museum's collections.
The exhibition takes the form of a scenographic journey designed by the artist himself , at the end of which Hiroshi Sugimoto's words resonate:
“I must use photography as a means of imprisoning the ghosts resurrected by the excess of photographic afterimages.” And it is in this gesture that something of the world persists.
