La Villette is dedicating three thousand six hundred square meters to the history of urban art, from the trains of the Bronx to Parisian gallery walls. Initiated in 2018 in New York by historian Roger Gastman, Beyond the Streets is making a stop in Paris, with around one hundred artists gathered in the nave of the Grande Halle. Born in a Brooklyn warehouse, the project aims to tell, in a single journey, the story of a countercultural movement and its slow entry into institutions. The scenography unfolds around ten thematic spaces, including the Cosmic Cavern, the Vandal’s Bedroom, a journey through the world of spray paint, and a section called Tags of Paris dedicated to the Parisian roots of the practice. Keith Haring, FUTURA 2000, Kenny Scharf, JR, Invader, JonOne, Shepard Fairey: the map brings together the major names. In Tags of Paris, Gérard Zlotykamien holds a central place. Born in 1940, he began tagging Paris in 1963 with his Éphémères, anonymous silhouettes painted with black stencils, before the emergence of New York taggers. The international story of graffiti thus also begins in France. Don't miss the concept store designed by Sarah Andelman, former founder of Colette, during your visit.
