For the bicentenary of photography, the Catacombs are exhibiting Nadar's work twenty meters underground, in the very galleries he was the first to illuminate, until January 31, 2027.

He is the one who photographed Baudelaire, Victor Hugo, and Sarah Bernhardt, capturing the faces of the nineteenth century. He is the one who, in 1858, ascended in a balloon and brought back the first aerial photograph in history. He is the one who, three years later, descended from the batteries into the quarries and was the first to illuminate the underground. Finally, he is the one who lent his studio on the Boulevard des Capucines to the Impressionists in 1874 for their first exhibition.

Nadar captured Paris from every angle, from the sky to the ossuaries. The Catacombs return the favor and display this work in the very galleries he illuminated. A photography exhibition twenty meters underground, in its own setting: the bicentenary could hardly have found a better setting.
