Until December 13, 2026, the Cité de la dentelle et de la mode (City of Lace and Fashion) in Calais is showcasing a display by Vincent Richard de Latour and Claire Maïques, textile finishing artisans. Lace, organza, marbled leather, and metallization combine in a delightfully disorienting exhibition.
A Chanel dress from the Spring/Summer 2020 haute couture collection opens the exhibition, black lace on white silk tulle. The lace comes from the workshops of Solstiss. Before arriving on Rue Cambon, it passed through the hands of Vincent Richard de Latour and Claire Maïques. Their discreet and largely unknown craft nevertheless shapes an essential part of what fashion displays: textile finishing, the art of transforming fabric once the weaving is complete.
Their workshop, opened in 2014, combines hand-painting, screen printing, needle felting, cutting, and lamination with metallic foil. The Cité de la Dentelle (Lace Museum) entrusted them with a display for the third edition of the Makers of Fashion event, and the result is beautifully disorienting.
The surfaces play with suppleness against rigidity, opacity against transparency, and borrow their textures from minerals, rock strata, and erosion, before juxtaposing them with strict geometries. The metallic finish does the rest: reflections accentuate the reliefs, leaving us unsure of what we are looking at.
Laminated organza folded like origami, marbled leather, lace encased in metal. And some of the pieces are created from production scraps, assembled in patchwork. What the fashion industry discards, the workshop transforms into a rare piece.
