Exhibition From Vine to Glass: Wine in Balzac's Work, at the Maison de Balzac
BALZAC'S HOUSE
From November 26, 2026 to April 6, 2027
The Maison de Balzac follows wine from seller to consumer, from November 26, 2026 to April 6, 2027. More than eighty works—paintings, engravings, posters, and winemaking equipment—for a subject that is perfectly timed.
Here is a subject that is perfectly timed for this festive season. Champagne appears nearly eighty times in The Human Comedy. Balzac drank little, but he observed everything: who drinks, where, with whom, and what this reveals about a society.
The Maison de Balzac displays more than eighty works—paintings, engravings, posters, and winemaking equipment—in its four exhibition rooms, and follows the journey of wine from seller to consumer. Daumier and the caricaturists of his time provide the drinkers.
Champagne, meanwhile, was reinvented during the writer's lifetime: the first vintage in 1810, the riddling table in 1816, and the wire cage in 1844. At the Paris city gates, outside the city limits, a one-liter jug sold for six sous.
